The Giau Barrier

The traces left by man in the Cortina Delicious area are manifold and ancient.

Fascinating routes of 2/3 hours will reveal to you the life at high altitudes of bygone days and of the present day, in the extraordinary landscapes of the Giau, Falzarego and Valparola Passes .

We recommend a visit to the Giau Barrier, to step back to times when man was closely tied to the resources of the mountain and fought to defend its frontiers.

For 5 centuries the Ampezzani and Sanvitesi fought over the pastures of the Giau.

In 1753, the famous Barrier put an end to the centuries of fighting.

This is an imposing dry-stone wall built in a mere six months, still clearly visible today.

The wall marks the ancient state border between the Serenissima Republic of Venice and the Hapsburg Empire, which lasted until 1918, when Cortina became Italian.
